Room 238, Wednesday afternoon

After stopping by Anakin's office in SP, la, Aeryn comes back to the room. Spending some time in the gym last night helped a lot, so she's at least acting like a normal person again. It'll get less weird.

She's about to go feed the fish when she sees Bertram sitting behind the tank, eyestalks twitching a little as he watchs Bruno swim. "Yes, I know, it's relaxing," she says. "Too bad you're a machine."

Bertram just beeps at her and continues watching. Even a DRD should have hobbies. Probably.

She really regrets saying that now. "I worry about you and I'm not going to deny that. But it isn't your fault, it isn't the only thing going on, and you can't help any of that. Don't be sorry."

"If it's that bad," he says, "I can leave or go home or something until it stops."

"No," she says simply.

He frowns and looks away again.

"John, you don't need to go anywhere," Aeryn says. "I don't want you to."

"I don't want to either," he says, "but if it would better..."

"No. Stop. You're not going anywhere without me."

"Are you going to be all right?"

"I'm going to be fine," she assures him.

And that's really all he cares about. "Okay."

She leans forward, kissing him lightly. "Good."

He smiles a little at both the kiss and the word.

She smiles a little back, patting his cheek. "That's better."

That's enough to make him quietly laugh.

"I like it when you do that," she says quietly.

"I know," he says and does it again.

"You need to do that more," she decides wiith a smile.

"I'll try," he says and means that.

What worries her is that he has to try, but she doesn't let the smile fade so she doesn't have to explain that one.

He returns her smile, broader this time.

"What?" she asks, still smiling.

"I just felt like smiling," he says.

"Good," she says again. No, her vocabulary isn't extensive today, but if you're going to be stuck on a word, that one works.
