Cambridge, Sunday afternoon
Jun. 29th, 2008 03:17 pmThe good thing about the new management at Aeryn's second job coming in and replacing all the old employees with ones they selected was that when it was her turn to get the axe, at least she still had the first job to fall back on. At the end of her shift, one of her coworkers that had also been let go, Dave, decided to give her a ride back to the apartment.
"Any idea what you're going to do yet?" she asked him on the way.
"Nah. Probably take some time off before school starts up again," he answered. "I can slack off a little as long as I'm with my parents. Sucks to be you, though."
"Thanks," Aeryn said dryly, glaring.
"How about you, any clue yet?"
"Ask for more hours at the other job," she said. In truth, she was sort of relieved that she didn't have to kill herself working the two jobs at least for a while. "I got a small promotion, that will help."
"You'll do fine. You're a good worker, they'll be shooting you up to management in no time. And then you can be the Man and I can hate you."
Flashbacks of Blair. Though she did have to admit, as much as she hated the jobs she had to do and they didn't pay enough, she was doing it for a reason and hard work was paying off. Not as much as it should have, but it was. It was encouraging.
She felt her phone vibrate, and pulled it out to see who actually ws trying to send her a text message. She hated those things. The English language made even less sense when people were trying to type things in a limited amount of space on a keypad not built for it that didn't even reflect the stupid QWERTY thing she'd finally figured out. At the very least, she never ever sent them back. Aeryn would forgive it this time, though, because it was from John's younger sister Olivia, just asking "Found crib @ yard sale. Susan is asking if u need y/n?"
Once she deciphered that, she was more than a little alarmed to realize that she was actually considering it. Moreso that the initial thought didn't scare her anymore.
"Anything good?" Dave asked.
Aeryn paused. "Don't know yet."
She pointed out her building, and Dave pulled up to the curb. "If you need anything, give me a call. Not like I'll be doing much," he said cheerfully.
She nodded, and got out of the car. "I will. Good luck."
"You too," he said.
Aeryn closed the door, and as he took off, she found herself picking up the phone to call Olivia back.
