Room 209, Saturday afternoon

After talking with Isabel in the gym, Aeryn heads back up to her room. She's been given something to think about, even though she doesn't even know how to broach the topic with John at the moment. Which is fine as he's currently in detention anyway. Besides, they have to see Zhaan first, and that's going to take a bit of preparation as it is. She just isn't sure how much John will want to reveal and how much she'll have to say for him and how much trouble she'll get into about that. She's just had to learn how to be much more careful, that's all. It's a skill she should have had before.

She closes her door.

[Knocking is perfectly acceptable.]

"Hi," he says and doesn't come in just yet.

"Today was fun. Can we do it again soon"

"Get your own damn detention."

She keeps the door open, frowning. "Did you have fun?" she asks. And almost adds a both into the sentence.

"Oh tons," he says, shaking his head and wincing. "I love detention. I love Skeeter turning me into a dog for no reason and getting gum stuck on me."

"Gum?" she says, and adds, trying to help, "At least you like dogs?"

"Sure. I guess." He actually turns around and makes to push something that isn't there.

Aeryn winces at that, and steps in front of him so she can take his hand. "He isn't there."

"Yes he is," John insists, flailing slightly. "I can see him. He's there."

"John, no, he's not," she says, waving her hand through the spot he was just trying to push. "I would not allow him in my room. He's not here. He isn't real. You know I can't see him," she reminds him, hoping he hasn't gotten more delusional in the last half day.

"Doesn't mean he's not real," he says, still staring at Umberto. Umberto smiles back, almost gleefully. "It might just be visible to me. Something with my brain chemistry. He's not imaginary!"

"Okay," she nods. "Okay. That's why we're going to go to Zhaan. To find out why you're seeing him."

"I dunno," he says, shaking his head jerkily. "I don't know her. It's my head. Maybe it'll go away or something."

"Please."

"Tell her no, John. Tell her no and we'll go have ice cream!"

He shakes his head again but doesn't say anything. He chooses instead to rub his temple and grimace.

She swallows. "You know how you keep asking me what I need? Right now, I need you to go with me."

"I don't want it to hurt," he says quietly.

"It'll be all right," Aeryn assures him. "I'll be there with you the whole time. I'm not leaving."

All he can do is nod and turn his attention away from Umberto.

"Should we go now?" she asks quietly, and she's already really slowly backing towards the door, still holding onto his hand to bring him with her.

"Sure." He shrugs and lets himself be led.

Once they're in the hall, Aeryn closes the door to the room again, and leads John into town.
