Room 238, Wednesday evening

Aeryn doesn't have class on Wednesday, which is probably a bad thing, since she spent most of the day thinking way too hard about some of the things she'd heard last night. She's not one to panic, and if it's something John's been dealing with for this long, she knows there's no reason to freak out. Too much, at least.

Still, there's thinking, which is why her textbook is laying open on the table, as it has been since she gave up on it. She did distract herself at one point by going to get takeout from Ching Tai, waiting on the kitchen counter. She has no idea why, it just seemed like the thing to do.

John wanders home sometime after his class and smiles at her when he opens the door.

"Hey there, pretty girl."

That's a new greeting. She smiles a little and says, "Hey. I got food."

"Really?" He looks around for pizza boxes. "What?"

"Chinese," she says, pointing towards the counter where the boxes are sitting.

"Oh," he says and moves towards the food. "Yum! Thanks, babe!"

"I get at least some of the orange chicken," she warns. "How was class?"

He shrugs. "Hunting things again. It's fun but, you know."

John grabs a container of fried rice.

No, she doesn't. "I know what?"

"Not really the thing I'd wanna hunt," he says.

Aeryn raises her eyebrows, and though she's pretty sure she knows the answer, she asks anyway. "What would your preference be?"

"Things that I've seen before," he says and starts eating. "Mmm. I love Chinese food."

She's not exactly sure why she tries to get him to talk about this, considering she probably would have gotten angry and stalked off by now. "What things?"

"A different kind of monster," he says a little uncomfortably.

If she ever sees Scorpius again, she's killing him.

She sits back a little and asks, "If you could, what would you do to him?"

"Whatever I possibly could to make him hurt," he says and there's no hesitation.

She doesn't say anything, just waves him over to the couch.

He picks up the orange chicken along with his rice and joins her on the couch.

She takes the carton and asks quietly, "Still all right?"

"Mmm hmm," he says and peers into his rice.

Watching him for a moment, Aeryn says, "You've been doing well." Seriously, she hadn't had any idea.

He looks over at her. "How do you mean?"

"I hadn't been worrying," she answers.

"Oh." Still, he winces. "I know I should've told you, Aeryn. I'm really sorry for that. I just didn't think about it."

"No, I know," she says. She shakes her head, and pauses, and asks, "Should I have noticed?"

"No," he says. "Because it's only untolerable sometimes. And that's rare and I can control him. Most of the time, I didn't even know he was there."
