NPC pet store, mainland, Saturday evening

After visiting Luke, Aeryn had gone back to 238 where in conversation with John she'd somehow made mention of the fish-shaped fishbowl Isabel had gotten her for Christmas. This led to the trip to the mainland, to the store that Bruno had come from because they really need another NPC, and when Aeryn steps inside the store, she pauses for a second.

"This is what Fandom will look like the day everyone turns into an animal at once," she says.

He flails at her again. "Because we're not going to eat them! That's all!"

"Okay," she says, picking up the bowl with the biggest fish in it. "I was just asking."

"Do you want that one?"

"Well, I don't have any particular feelings either way on any of them, so this one will do," she answers.

He nods and says, "Let's go pay for him then."

And then he leads her straight for the puppies.

She is never getting him out of here. "This doesn't look like the cashier."

"This is better than the cashier!"

"We're not getting a dog, either," she says immediately.

"We can still look," he says, bouncing up to the glass.

"Yes, but why?" she says. She's definitely got nothing against dogs, she's just not sure why you'd just look at them.

"Because they're so damn cute," John answers, pressing his face to the glass.

She watches the one barking happily through the glass at its new big friend and repeats, "No dog."

"We can still look," John says, making faces at the little doggie.

The little doggie barks and tries sniffing him through the glass. "It doesn't seem very intelligent," Aeryn notes.

"He's young," John says, smiling widely. The doggie pants at him. "He's cute!"

She has to admit, John's kind of entertaining this way. "He doesn't look like Sean or Vladdie," she says.

"He's a different breed," John says. "He's a beagle."

The beagle jumps up and puts his paws on the glass.

"Beagle," she repeats, watching it. "How many breeds are there?"

"Lots," he says. That's when a little golden retriever comes up in front of Aeryn and puts one paw on the window.

The movement catches Aeryn's eye, and she slowly says, "...Hello? Can it hear me?"

"He can," John tells her, looking over. "I think he likes you."

The dog licks the glass in front of Aeryn.

"Don't lick the glass," Aeryn tells it helpfully. "It's glass."

The dog looks at her with sad puppy eyes.

"Why is it looking at me like that?" Aeryn asks John.

"Because it likes you," John says. "He wants you to talk to him."
