Room 209, Wednesday night

It might be things brought up when she was little, or the panic the last day at the thought that this planet might actually be frelled up enough to consider marriage between a five-year-old and a seven-year-old legal, or maybe even things she said in the interview with D'Anna, but Aeryn's just feeling quiet. It's not good, it's not bad, just... she's thinking.

And tossing the driver's ed manual in her closet, right by prom's pointy shoes. She's pretty sure she can pass it anyway. As long as they're driving real cars.

John knocks on the door...with his head. Hey, he's tired.

That knock sounds... different. Aeryn opens the door and says, "Hi," carefully, like she's trying to figure out why.

John rubs his forehead. "Hey."

"Did you knock with your head again?"

"...maybe." John grins. "I was trying out something new."

"How did that work out for you?"

"It made noise," he says proudly. "You busy?"

She shakes her head and lets him in. "Not at all, actually."

He comes inside, kissing her lightly on the way.

"How're you doin?"

She shrugs one shoulder. "Not married. How are you?"

He grins and takes a seat on the edge of her bed.

"Not married either. Had that been bothering you?"

"Slightly," she nods. Hello, understatement.

"Aww." John smiles at her. "If it'd been legal, we could've just gotten it annulled. Easy as pie."

For some reason, that bothers her, and she's trying not to show it. It might not work too well. "Nice to know it's that easy."

"Um." John frowns at her.

She shakes her head. "Get turned into anything today?"

"A flamingo," he says absently. Still frowning at her. "What's the matter?"

"Nothing."

"Uh huh. Right. Now be honest with me."

She sighs. "I would think that if I was actually going to get married, there would be more to it than 'easy as pie,' and what does that even mean?"

John frowns again. "Okay, I said that so you wouldn't think I would force you to stay married to me if that marriage had been legal."

"Since when have you ever been able to force me to do anything?" she asks. "I can't believe I'm actually having this conversation."

"I can't either," he agrees. "I didn't mean any harm, Aeryn."

She shakes her head. "It doesn't matter anyway."
