Room 238, Monday morning

After yesterday's talk with Vader, Aeryn pretty much went into quiet avoidy mode. It wasn't even that the talk had gone badly; in fact he'd only yelled once. But still, hearing those words out of Anakin's mouth was disconcerting, at best.

Which is today's excuse for why she didn't really sleep, and why she's finally starting to get out of bed. Hey, if she's going to be awake, might as well put that to use for something like breakfast.

"Leaving already?" John asks, not even bothering to protest her getting out of bed. He's used to it.

"No. I was just going to make breakfast," she says, but she stops where she is.

He nods and says, "Okay. Make something good!"

"Anything in particular you think is good?" she asks.

"Pancakes," he says, snuggling into his pillows.

"I suppose I can manage that," she says, getting up to to into the kitchen and start things. And she might be a little relieved he hasn't called her on the quiet avoidy mode.

"Everything all right?" John asks. He's picked up on the mood but doesn't want to directly ask about it.

"Shouldn't they be?" Which isn't necessarily an answer, but she's testing the waters.

Which means something's wrong. "Just a question."

When she's set things up so she doesn't have to keep an eye on the stove every second, she turns around and says, "I went to see Vader yesterday. It didn't go badly, nothing to worry about."

She really does have a problem not referring to him as Anakin. It just doesn't feel right.

"Then why're you acting like something happened?"

"Things just didn't go my way, that's all," she shrugs.

He fears what that actually means. "I have his class today, you know."

She hadn't realized that, but she's a lot less worried than she was last semester. "I don't think you'll have a problem," she assures him.

"Why would I have a problem?" John asks. "He's just a teacher."

"He's also prone to things like desk throwing when he hears something he doesn't like, and can be... difficult at times," she says.

"I'll be fine," he says absently.

"I know," she says. Mostly because she's pretty sure Anakin would know that John not being fine would mean all bets are off. Plus, he probably falls into the category of people that wouldn't get hurt, really. "He also loves giving out detentions, so remember that if you like your Saturdays."

"Right," he says, nodding. "Right, sure."

"And I'll be talking to him more," she says, because she might as well get that right out. "I think I'm okay to do so now."

That prickles him and he tries not to let it show. "Fine."

"It's okay," she says. "If it wasn't, I would tell you."

He's not really sure she would tell him. "Okay," he says and shrugs.

She'd been expecting more of an argument. "Really?"

He shrugged again. "I wouldn't win and you'd still go."
