The flipside of getting a chance to go out and help save a friend and hurt some things in the process was that afterwards, it was back to normal things, like filling out job applications in front of the TV and feeling uncomfortable in the current style of clothes. There might have been a little part of her that wondered if it would be wrong to wear a pulse pistol around the apartment, just for the night.

"You will, babe," John said and patted her leg. "Job searching isn't easy and it takes time."

"I remember," she sighed, and decided she was done with this topic. There had to be better ones. "I want to not deal with that right now."

"Then, don't," he said and offered her half his sandwich.

"If that's all you're having, keep it. I'm all right," she said.

"It's all I'm having right now," he said and continued holding it out. "Eat, babe."

"Are we going to go up and back on this for fifteen minutes anyway if I say no?"

"Just offering," he said and pulled the sandwich back. "That's all."

"Thank you. I just haven't been hungry. I blame those," she said, nodding at the applications while hoping this didn't start another talk about them.

"Want a foot rub?" John asked, smiling at her.

She looked up at him, smiling a little. "A foot rub?"

"Foot massage," he clarified, finishing his sandwich.

"I understood you. For once," she said, and after a moment pulled her feet up onto the couch.

He scooted closer and patted his lap. "Feet up here."

Wordlessly, she put her feet up on his lap, making herself comfortable against the arm of the sofa.

And wordlessly, John started slowly and thoroughly massaging her feet, digging his thumbs into the heels.

"I think you're actually getting better at this," she said after a moment.

"I wasn't good at foot massages before?" John asked, sounding amused.

"No, you were," she said. "And you've improved."

"Nice of you to say," he said and grinned at her. "I always like to know I'm getting better."

"Positive reinforcement does have its benefits," she said, smiling.

At that, he lightly pinched one of her toes.

She jerked, a little startled. "What was that for?" she asked.

"Because your toes are cute," he said and grinned.

"My toes are just that. Toes. They don't have descriptions," she told him.

"They are cute," he said and wiggled them.
